Fosamax (Alendronate)
DRUG CLASS AND MECHANISM : Alendronate is in a class of drugs applied for strengthening of the bone. Bone is in a constant condition of remodeling, where old bone is ablated by cells called osteoclasts, and new bone is generated by cells called osteoblasts. Alendronate blocks bone removal by the osteoclasts.

PREPARATIONS : tablet: 10mg (daily); 70mg (weekly)
STORAGE : Keep at room temperature, sealed container, avoid moisture.
PRESCRIBED FOR : Alendronate is accepted for the treatment of osteoporosis (thinning of bone) in women
after menopause. After menopause, it is observed an increased rate of bone loss (resorption). In these patients,
alendronate extends bone density by strengthening bone, and reduses the rate of bone fractures. Alendronate can
also help during the treatment of Paget's disease of the bone. This disease consists from a disorderly and accelerated
bone's remodelation which leads to bone weakness and pain. DOSING: For the best absorption alendronate should be taken
at least 30 minutes before food, beverage, vitamins or medicines. Alendronate should be accepted with a full glass
of plain water first thing in the morning. It is necessary for prevention of chemical irritation of the esophagus
(the tube that connects the mouth with the stomach). You shouldn't chew or suck the tablet. In case of having abnormalities
of the esophagus which delay esophageal emptying, such as scarring (stricture) or poor motility (achalasia) patients shouldn't
accept this drug. Patients shouldn't lie down for 30 minutes after swallowing the tablets if it is impossible this drug should be
avoided.
DRUG INTERACTIONS : It is not recommended for patients with significant kidney conditions because
there were no reports about safety of this drug in patients with kidney diseases. As alendronate can lower blood calcium, l
ow blood calcium levels are corrected before usage. Calcium supplements, antacids and medications can interfere with the
absorption of alendronate.
PREGNANCY : There were no reports about safety and effectiveness of alendronate in children or pregnant
and nursing women.
NURSING MOTHERS : There were no reports about safety and effectiveness of alendronate in children
or pregnant and nursing women.
SIDE EFFECTS : Alendronate is a well tolerated drug. The common side effects include stomach pain
or upset, constipation, diarrhea, muscle ache, and headache. Alendronate can cause heartburn in patients who lie down
after swallowing the tablet because this delays passage of the drug to the stomach.
