21.05.2008 - Aneuploidy Zink and Vitamins
In his recent interview, Professor Eskenazi said that though the importance of maternal diet on reproduction is very high, especially if we talk about folic acid intake. It is well known that the importance of studying paternal nutrition when considering male-mediated developmental consequences.
It has been already shown that the intake of micronutrient by parents may contribute to successful conceptions by improving the quality of the sperm. This study is the first to suggest that paternal diet may play a role after conception in the development of healthy babies.
The Professor of Maternal and Child Health and Epidemiology and Director of the Center for Children's Environmental Health at the School of Public Health, University of California, Berkeley, USA, said has held the study that found statistically significant association between high foliate intake and lower sperm aneuploidy.
The frequencies of several types of aneuploidy were lower on 25-30% among men who had the highest intake of foliate between 722-1150 micrograms, if we should compare with men with a lower intake.
However, this study cannot prove by 100% that exactly high folate intake has caused the lower sperm aneuploidy levels. Proved is only the existence of an association. This is the first study of its kind and the results indicate the need for further research, especially a randomized controlled trial.
The impressing news was that the researchers found no positive consistent associations between aneuploidy and levels of zinc and the other vitamins in future parents diet.
