Partner satisfaction and prostate cancer treatment
According to results of a multi-center study published Wednesday in the New England Journal of Medicine, the usual situation among men with prostate cancer is that they and their partners face difficult decisions about treatment. They should be informed regarding expected outcomes can be hard to find.
Prostate surgery, external radiation or brachytherapy (radioactive 'seeds') and the results of this type of therapy are very individualized. The patient should be informed that the success depends not only on age, but also on factors that have been previously overlooked, such as the size of the prostate. Important as well is whether a man had urinary symptoms due to prostate enlargement before treatment.
The study states that important concerns are problems with sexuality, bowel problems and problems with urinary incontinence after prostate cancer treatment which was the main concern of focus during latest studies.
