26.04.2008 - Circumcision s protects from STDs: Myth or Reality?
A new research published in Journal of Pediatrics on March 2008 says that though male circumcision protects men from HIV, it does not protect them against such sexually transmitted infections as chlamydia, genital warts and genital herpes.
For treatment of genital herpes the researchers from the University of Otago advice Zovirax or Valtrex.
It is consistently proved that male circumcision gives men some protection against HIV. However it is unclear if it makes lower the risk of other types of STIs.
To resolve this question the study, in which 499 men born in 1972 and 1973 were involved, of whom 40% had been circumcised in early childhood, it was found that up to age 32, there were no statistically significant differences in rates of STIs other than HIV between the two groups f men: 40% circumcised and respectively 60 not circumcised. There was found no difference even after adjustments were made for sexual behavior and social factors.
The researchers found out that 23.4% and 23.5% of the circumcised and uncircumcised men, respectively, had STIs, the most common of which were chlamydia , genital warts and genital herpes.
Dr. Nigel P. Dickson who led the research says it appears unlikely that circumcision has a major protective effect against common STIs.
