18.04.2008 - Systolic and Diastolic Blood Pressure Lowering Now is Explained
Recently the Archives of Internal Medicine published the research that explains how special kind of cholesterol-lowering drugs can lower blood pressure both systolic and diastolic.
The experiment to explain this unusual benefit lasted quite long for a month.
More than one thousand people who used statins were divided into three groups:
First group were given the statin drug simvastatin (Zocor),
Second group were given pravastatin (Pravachol)
Third group were given a placebo.
If we should compare the effect of Zocor and the effects of placebo, the statin reduced systolic blood pressure as well as diastolic blood pressure by 2 to 3 millimeters of mercury in the first group. Statistically this effect of lowering blood pressure was very significant, disregarding its small size.
However Golomb says that after six months people were taken off the drugs and checked again two months later, those benefits had disappeared.
This proves that to get more gains you should take regular treatment. It can up to a point be controlled by lifestyle changes such as losing weight, having regular physical activity and exercise, taking fewer salt and sugar, stop smoking.
