Levitra (Vardenafil)
DRUG CLASS AND MECHANISM : Vardenafil (Levitra) is a medicine that should be accepted orally. It is a phosphodiesterase inhibitor
related to sildenafil (Viagra) and is appointed for the treatment of impotence (the inability to attain or maintain a penile erection).
The engorgement of the penis with blood leads to penile erection. This engorgement appears in case of delivering blood to the penis by the
blood vessels which results to extending in size and increasement the delivery of blood to the penis. At the same time, the blood vessels
carrying blood away from the penis reduce in size and diminish the removal of blood from the penis. Sexual stimulation causes the engorgement
and erection. These processes provoke the production and release of nitric oxide in the penis. After that nitric oxide causes activation of
the enzyme called guanylate cyclase. This enzyme causes formation of cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) which is necessary for extending
and reducing the size of the blood vessels carrying blood to and from the penis, respectively. Vardenafil (Levitra) causes longer persistation of
cGMP by averting an enzyme called phosphodiesterase-5 from destroying cGMP and these ransformations prolong the engorgement of the penis.
Vardenafil (Levitra) was approved by the FDA in August, 2003.

PREPARATIONS : Tablets: 2.5, 5, 10 and 20 mg.
STORAGE : Vardenafil should be kept at room temperature between 15-30°C (59-86°F).
PRESCRIBED FOR : Vardenafil (Levitra) is applied for treating impotence.
DOSING : For most individuals, adviced dose of vardenafil (Levitra) is 10 mg per day accepted 60 minutes before intercourse. If there is no response or side effects, the dose may be extended to 20 mg or, if there are side effects, it may be lowered to 5 mg. Individuals more senior than 65 years should begin therapy with 5 mg. The recommended starting dose of vardenafil (Levitra) in case of taking drugs that extend increase the blood levels of vardenafil (Levitra) should be 2.5 - 5 mg.
DRUG INTERACTIONS : The distruction and elimination of vardenafil (Levitra) from the body is blocked by erythromycin, ketoconazole (Nizoral), itraconazole (Sporanox), indinavir (Crixivan) and ritonavir (Norvir), that's why these medicines extend the concentration of vardenafil (Levitra) in the blood. In case of using these drugs in combination with vardenafil, the dose of vardenafil (Levitra) should be diminished in order to prevent side effects from vardenafil. Vardenafil (Levitra) decreases the concentration of ritonavir and indinavir and may diminish the effects of these drugs. Vardenafil (Levitra) extends the heart rate and also exaggerates the blood pressure lowering effects of nitrates (e.g. nitroglycerine). In patients taking nitrates for chest pain (angina), vardenafil (Levitra) could resalt in chest pain by increasing heart rate and lowering blood pressure, that's why patients with angina shouldn't accept vardenafil. Individuals accepting alpha-blockers shouldn't use vardenafil because it also exaggerates the blood pressure lowering effects of alpha-blocking drugs, e.g. terazosin (Hytrin).
PREGNANCY : Vardenafil (Levitra) is not applied in women.
NURSING MOTHERS : There were no studies about vardenafil's influence in breastfeeding women.
SIDE EFFECTS : Vardenafil (Levitra) has some side effects. The most common are facial flushing (reddening), headaches, stomach upset, diarrhea, flu like symptoms and nausea. Vardenafil (Levitra) also may lead to chest pain, low blood pressure, blurred vision and changes in color vision, abnormal ejaculation and priapism (painful erection).
