Product Description
Lotensin (Benazepril)
DRUG CLASS AND MECHANISM : Benazepril is an ACE (angiotensin converting enzyme) inhibitor, responsible
for the formation of angiotensin II. Angiotensin II results to enlarge of blood pressure caused by constriction of arteries in the body.
Benazepril like other ACE inhibitors reduce blood pressure by blocking the formation of angiotensin II that lead to widenning of the
arteries. Narowwimg the arteries not only reduses blood pressure, but also improves the pump function a failing heart and improves
cardiac output in patients with heart failure.
GENERIC AVAILABLE : No.
PRESCRIPTION : YES.
PREPARATIONS : Tablets: 5 mg, 10 mg, 20 mg, 40 mg.
STORAGE : Tablets should be kept at room temperature in a tightly closed container.
PRESCRIBED FOR : Benazepril can be appointed as a unique treatment of high blood pressure or in combination with diuretic
medication for amplification of blood pressure lowering effect. Lotensin HCT is an example of a drug which combines the effect of benazepril
with a thiazide type diuretic (water pill) in treatment of hypertension. Benazepril can be useful in the treatment of congestive heart
failure because it decreases the resistance in the arteries.
DOSING : May be taken with meals or without them.
DRUG INTERACTIONS : Benazepril shouldn't be accepted by people with allergy to ACE inhibitors. There were reports about swelling of the facial tissues and even the upper airways connected with ACE inhibitors, in very rare occasions they can lead to serious breathing difficulties. Benazepril can cooperate with diuretics (water pills) and other blood pressure drugs and can lead to an excessive drop in blood pressure, which can manifested in weakness, dizziness, and lightheadedness. ACE inhibitors can worsen kidney's function, specially in patients with severe heart failure or pre-existing kidney disease. Appointment of benazepril with potassium supplements, potassium containing salt substitutes, and potassium conserving diuretics such as amiloride (Moduretic), spironolactone (Aldactone), and triamterene (Dyazide, Maxzide), can cause dangerously high blood levels of potassium. Indomethacin (Indocin) and possibly other anti-inflammatory drugs can reduse the blood pressure lowering effect of benazepril. There were reports about lowering the quantity of white blood cells with the usage of another ACE inhibitor. But it is a rare occasion. Low white blood cells extend the patient's risk of infections. In case of combination with lithium, benazepril can extend lithium to toxic levels in the blood. Safe use in children is not studied. It is not habit forming.
PREGNANCY : Benazepril like other ACE inhibitors can be harmful to the fetus and shouldn't be accepted by pregnant women.
NURSING MOTHERS : It is not approved in nursing mothers.
SIDE EFFECTS : Benazepril is generally a well tolerated drug and side effects are usually mild and transient. The most common side effects are dry and persistent cough, abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea, dizziness, fatigue, headache, loss of taste, loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting, easy bruising or bleeding, chest pain, chills, difficulty breathing, severe dizziness or fainting, fever, numbness or tingling in the hands or feet, rash, and a sore or swollen throat. There were reports about liver dysfunction and skin yellowing (jaundice) arising in rare cases.
