Imitrex (Sumatriptan)
DRUG CLASS AND MECHANISM :Sumatriptan is an antimigraine drug. The cause of migraine headaches is considered to be dilatation of the blood vessels in the head. Sumatriptan makes the blood vessels compress and in that way easeing migraine headache. Despite the fact that, the drug is very effective in relieving migraine, it does not prevent or lower the number of attacks of migraine.

PREPARATIONS : The medicine can be used both orally or by injection. Tablets: (25mg, 50mg). Injection: (6mg).
STORAGE :The drug should be kept at room temperature, away from heat and light. Store the medicine away from the reach of children.
PRESCRIBED FOR : Sumatriptan is taken when there is a need to relieve migraine and nausea and light sensitivity that are tied together. This drug has no property to prevent or reduce the number of attacks of disease. It is not intend for treating other types of headaches.
DOSING : The medicine may be taken with or without food.
DRUG INTERACTIONS : Sumatriptan is metabolized mainly by the liver so for patients with liver dysfunction it is necessary to lower the dosa. Elevation of blood pressure and spasm of the coronary arteries of the heart can be caused by taking it. Sumatriptan is not allowed when treating patients with coronary artery disease (patients with angina pectoris and a history of heart attacks), and patients with poorly controlled high blood pressure. Patients with risk factors for coronary artery disease ( high blood pressure, diabetes, elevated blood cholesterol, obesity, cigarette smoking, and strong family history of heart attacks) should be treated carefully. It is better for the patient to be given the first dose of sumatriptan in the physician's office in oder to avoid any negative heart events. Sumatriptan does not combine with ergot type migraine medications, or with MAO inhibitors. Useing sumatriptan and ergotamine together can become the reason of prolonged spasm of the blood vessels. 24 hours period between taking these two drugs is enough. There is no information if the medicine is safe for children. Rarely, but it is known about occasions of seizure with patients with epilepsy treating by sumatriptan.
PREGNANCY :It has not been established if it is safe to use the drug in pregnancy.
NURSING MOTHERS : It has not been established if it is safe to use the drug in nursing mothers.
SIDE EFFECTS : For many patients suffered from migraine sumatriptan has been a useful and effective treatment in aborting attacks. Side effects are generally transient. Such manifestations as pain or tightness in the chest or throat, tingling, flushing, weakness, dizziness, abdominal discomfort, and sweating can be related to common side effects. Allergic reactions (even anaphylaxis) are very rare and usually occur to individuals who are highly allergic to multiple allergens.
