DRUG CLASS AND MECHANISM : Amlodipine belongs to a class of drugs called calcium channel blockers, which inhibite the transport of calcium into the smooth muscle cells lining the coronary arteries and other arteries of the body. As calcium is necessary in muscle contraction, inhibiting calcium transport relaxes artery muscles and widens coronary arteries and other arteries of the body. By relaxing coronary arteries, amlodipine is necessary for averting chest pain (angina) which arises from coronary artery spasm. Relaxing the muscles lining the arteries of the rest of the body reduses the blood pressure, which dimishes the loading on the heart as it pumps blood to the body. Lowering heart loading reduses the heart muscle's demand for oxygen, and that's why helps to avert angina in patients with coronary artery disease.

PRESCRIBED FOR : Chest pain (angina) appears in case of shortage of the oxygen delivered to cardiac musles. Coronary artery blockage or spasm can lead to insufficiency of oxygen in a patient with coronary artery narrowing. Amlodipine is applied for the treatment and avertion of angina resulting from coronary spasm as well as from exertion. Amlodipine is also appointed in the treatment of high blood pressure.
DOSING : Amlodipine can be accepted with meals or without them. Amlodipine is metabolized mainly by the liver and that's why in patients with liver dysfunction dosages may need to be lowered .
DRUG INTERACTIONS : In patients with severe coronary artery disease, amlodipine can extend the frequency and severity of angina or actually cause a heart attack on rare occasions. This phenomenon usually appears in case of starting amlodipine, or when the dosage is extended. Excessive redusing of blood pressure during the bigining of amlodipine treatment can appear, especially in patients already accepting another blood pressure lowering drug. PREGNANCY : Generally, amlodipine is not apprised in pregnancy, and by nursing mothers and children.

SIDE EFFECTS : Side effects of amlodipine are mild and reversible. The two most common side effects are headache and edema (swelling) of the lower extremities. Less common side effects are dizziness, flushing, fatigue, nausea, and palpitations.
