DRUG CLASS AND MECHANISM : Irbesartan belongs to class of medicines called angiotensin receptor blockers. This group also includes such drugs as losartan (Cozaar) and valsartan (Diovan). This medicines block angiotensin II, a chemical that narrows the arteries and veins. This action leads to dilation of the arteries and veins, and blood pressure is decreased. When the blood pressure is lowered, the heart doesn't have to work so hard for pumping blood. Irbesartan was approved by the FDA in 1998.

PREGNANCY : Medicines that work like irbesartan--specifically, ACE inhibitors such as enalapril (Vasotec)--can cause injury and even laed to death of the fetus. Because of the possibility of having a similar effect on the fetus irbesartan shouldn't be accepted during pregnancy.

NURSING MOTHERS : It is reported that another angiotensin receptor blocker, losartan (Cozaar), is secreted in rat milk and is toxic to newborn rats. Since irbesartan is similar to losartan and may share a similar effect, irbesartan shouldn't be given to nursing mothers. There are no reports about safety and efficacy of irbesartan in children.
