Product Description
Pamelor (Nortriptyline)
DRUG CLASS AND MECHANISM : Nortriptyline is an antidepressant drug which belongs to the tricyclic class. Medicines of this class are usually referred to as tricyclic antidepressants, or TCAs. Depression is determined as an all-pervasive sense of sadness and gloom. In most cases the reason of depression is abnormal levels of brain neurotransmitters (neurotransmitters are called chemicals that the nerve cells use to be in contact with each other). The raising of the mood ("anti-depresses") when taking Nortriptyline is conditioned by raising the level of neurotransmitters in brain tissue.

PRESCRIBED FOR : Nortriptyline is prescribed to highten the mood of patients with depression. insomnia, restlessness,
and nervousness can also be treated by nortriptyline because it is also a sedative. It also suits for treating chronic pain and the pain
of neuralgia.
DOSING : The dose of nortriptyline is prescribed in order of the patient's needs. Sometimes, it is better to start with relatively low doses, such as 25mg, given three times a day. It is necessary to bring down the risk of excessive sedation early in the course of therapy. Then it is posible to increase doses slowly. It may take several weeks to observe the full effect of treatment by nortriptyline. Other physicians prefer to give nortriptyline once a day, in which case it is advised to be given at bedtime to take advantage of its sedating functios. For elderly persons and patients with advanced liver disease it is advised to take lower doses.
DRUG INTERACTIONS : The effects of other medicines and drugs that make the brain's processes slower (include alcohol, barbiturates, benzodiazepines (e.g. lorazepam, Ativan), and narcotics) can be exaggerated by nortriptyline. Reserpine, given to patients taking TCAs, can have a stimulatory effect. It is not allowed to use nortriptyline and other TCAs with monoamine oxidase inhibiting drugs, for example, isocarboxazid (Marplan), phenelzine (Nardil), tranylcypromine (Parnate), and procarbazine (Matulane). The danger of high fever, convulsions and even death exists when these drugs are used in tandem. Cimetidine (Tagamet) can growth nortriptyline blood levels and possibly cause side effects. Propafenone (Rythmol), flecainide (Tonocard), quinidine (Quinidex, Quinaglute), and fluoxetine (Prozac) are other drugs which share this effect.
PREGNANCY : There is very little information if it is dangerous for the fetus when the pregnant women is treated by nortriptyline. The doctor may decide to use it if its benefits are seemed to be higher than potential risks.
