DRUG CLASS AND MECHANISM : Venlafaxine is in a new class of drugs accepted for treatment of depression called anti-depressant medications. They act on chemical messengers in the brain. These chemical messengers are called neurotransmitters, and some examples are serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine. Neurotransmitters are produced by nerve cells and are released by the cells. The neurotransmitters move to nearby nerve cells and affect on the cells activity. It is believed by many experts that a disbalance in these neurotransmitters causes depression and also can play a role in anxiety. And it is also believed that venlafaxine works by blocking the release or affecting the action of these neurotransmitters. Venlafaxine is available in an extended release formulation (Effexor XR).

PREPARATIONS : Effexor is issued in tablets of 25, 37.5, 50, 75, and 100 mg. Effexor XR is issued in capsules of 37.5, 75, and 150 mg.
STORAGE : Keep in a dry place at 20-25°C (68-77°F).
PRESCRIBED FOR : Venlafaxine is accepted for the treatment of depression, depression with associated
symptoms of anxiety, generalized anxiety disorder, and social anxiety disorder. Effexor XR is applied for the treatment of adults
with panic disorder.
DOSING : Venlafaxine needs to be taken with meals. Doses should be individual because they vary greatly and they should be appointed by the doctor. The anti-depressant effects are submaximal for 1-2 weeks. If it is necessary to finish application of a drug, the dose should be reduced gradually under supervision of the doctor. For patients with difficulty swallowing: capsules of Effexor XR can be opened and the contents sprinkled on a spoonful of applesauce.
DRUG INTERACTIONS : Venlafaxine in combination with MAO inhibitors such as Nardil and Parnate can lead to a dangerous consequences, that's why they shouldn't be accepted. There must be a waiting period of 14 days between taking these two classes of drugs. Venlafaxine like other drugs having affects on the brain is applied cautiously, especially early in the course of treatment, because it may lead to slow reflexes or impair judgment. There were no reports about safety in children till 18 years.
PREGNANCY : The effects of venlafaxine on the fetus are unknown.
NURSING MOTHERS : It is unknown if venlafaxine has secretion to the milk and that's why it is unknown if it may have an effect on nursing infants.
SIDE EFFECTS : Venlafaxine, like most anti-depressants, may lead to nausea, headaches, anxiety, insomnia, drowsiness, and loss of appetite. It can also causes increased blood pressure, which should be monitored. Seizures have been reported.
