Neurontin (Gabapentin)
DRUG CLASS AND MECHANISM : Gabapentin is in the class of drugs called anticonvulsants because they are appointed for the treatment of seizures (epilepsy) and herpes zoster (shingles). Gabapentin is similar to the brain chemical called gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA) but it's machanism of action is unknown.

PREPARATIONS : Capsules: 100mg, 300mg, 400mg, and 800mg sizes by Park-Davis labs.
STORAGE : Keep in a dry place at 15-30 degrees C (69-86 F)
PRESCRIBED FOR : Gabapentin is appointed for the treatment of seizure disorders and herpes zoster (shingles).
DOSING : Gabapentin can be accepted with meals or without them. The dose should be selected by the doctor because it differes greatly between individuals. Usually the medicine is applied two or three times a day. It is not approved under the age of 12 years old. If it is necessary to abolish this drug it should be made under the doctor's supervision.
DRUG INTERACTIONS : Gabapentin is a safe drug having no interactions with other medicines except for it's potential of added sedation. Gabapentin should not be accepted within 2 hours of Maalox. Gabapentin may interfere with the reading of N- Multistix in detecting urine protein.
SIDE EFFECTS : Neurontin has few side effects. They are sleepiness, dizziness, unsteady gait, fatigue and eye twitching.
