Allegra (Fexofenadine)
DRUG CLASS AND MECHANISM : Fexofenadine is a medicine that should be accepted orally. It is a "second generation" antihistamine that is applied for treatment the signs and symptoms of allergy that are caused by histamine. Other drugs in the same class include of loratadine (Claritin), cetirizine (Zyrtec) and azelastine (Astelin). Histamine is a chemical that couse many of the signs and symptoms of allergic reactions such as swelling of the lining of the nose, sneezing, and itchy eyes. Histamine is thrown out from histamine-storing cells (mast cells) and then operates on other cells of the organism having receptors for histamine. The influence of the histamine to the receptors provokes cell's "activation," which exempt other chemicals that give the effects associated with allergy, for example, sneezing. Fexofenadine stops the work of one type of receptor for histamine called the H1 receptor and thus blocks activation of H1 receptor-containing cells by histamine. As against the first generation antihistamines, fexofenadine and the other drugs from the group of second-generation antihistamines don't penetrate through the hemato-encephalic barrier and that's why they cause less drowsiness. Fexofenadine was approved by the FDA in July, 1995.

PREPARATIONS : Tablets, 30, 60 and 180 mg; capsules, 60 mg.
STORAGE : The drug should be stored at room temperature between 15-30°C (59-86°F).
PRESCRIBED FOR :Fexofenadine is appointed when treating seasonal allergies and chronic urticaria (hives)
in adults and children 6 years of age or older.
DOSING : The advised dose for adults and children 12 years or older suffering from seasonal allergies is 60 mg twice daily or 180 mg once daily. For children 6-11 years of age recommended dose is 30 mg twice daily. For the treatment of chronic urticaria, adults and children 12 years or older should be given 60 mg twice daily, and children 6-11 years of age should use 30 mg twice daily. Fexofenadine can be taken with meals or without them.
DRUG INTERACTIONS : The lead controlled clinical studies have not revealed influence of other medicines on efficiency and safety of fexofenadine.
PREGNANCY : It has not been carried out researches about influence of Fexofenadine on pregnant women.
NURSING MOTHERS : It has not been lead researches about influence of Fexofenadine in breast-feeding women.
SIDE EFFECTS : Fexofenadine can have some side effects. The most common are nausea, vomiting, weakness and sleepiness.
