Fexofenadine is a medicine that should be accepted orally. It is a "second
generation" antihistamine that is applied for treatment the signs
and symptoms of allergy that are caused by histamine. Other drugs in the
same class include of loratadine (Claritin), cetirizine (Zyrtec) and azelastine
(Astelin). Histamine is a chemical that couse many of the signs and symptoms
of allergic reactions such as swelling of the lining of the nose, sneezing,
and itchy eyes. Histamine is thrown out from histamine-storing cells (mast
cells) and then operates on other cells of the organism having receptors
for histamine. The influence of the histamine to the receptors provokes
cell's "activation," which exempt other chemicals that give
the effects associated with allergy, for example, sneezing. Fexofenadine
stops the work of one type of receptor for histamine called the H1 receptor
and thus blocks activation of H1 receptor-containing cells by histamine.
As against the first generation antihistamines, fexofenadine and the other
drugs from the group of second-generation antihistamines don't penetrate
through the hemato-encephalic barrier and that's why they cause less drowsiness.
